An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

Yet the odds had jumped to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a transaction based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other traders also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from elections to politics.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Insider trading is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting industry.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
