US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand US flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest after the closure began.
