The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
