The offspring of previous South African President Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror accusations at the commencement of her trial in the harbor city of the city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being charged over statements she published on social media several years back during fatal protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her dad.

A period of disorder in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including theft and intentional burning, left at least 300 deceased and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of fuelling this violence and faces accusations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.

Context of the Case

The unrest were centered in the provinces of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the former president's apprehension for disobeying a court order to appear as a witness at an investigation into allegations of impropriety while he was in power.

The defendant has consistently rejected the charges against her, with her attorney previously calling the state's case as weak.

She has also repeatedly stated the allegations against her were an bid to settle political scores with her father after he started his own political organization and competed against the ANC.

Support and Court Representation

This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "power abuse" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and family-related harassment" against the former president and his family.

A small number of followers from her group, her party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her parent and other group representatives were present at the proceedings inside.

The defense has argued that the testimony presented by government lawyers is inadequate and does not have compelling evidence for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Case

  • Social media statements from the past form the basis of the prosecution's evidence
  • Violent unrest in 2021 resulted in major deaths and monetary destruction
  • The individual on trial confronts multiple charges of incitement to unrest
  • Legal trials are anticipated to carry on for numerous weeks

The legal proceedings continues as all parties present their evidence before the court in what is expected to be a closely watched legal battle with significant politically charged ramifications for South Africa.
