I thought I edged it - Alex Carey on DRS survival.
Australia gloveman Alex Carey revealed he felt he had feathered the ball when he was overturned on Decision Review System during day one of the 3rd Ashes Test against the English.
Having been given a life on 72, Carey proceeded to score a fine 106 to aid the Australians finish on 326-8 at the end of play in the Adelaide Oval.
What happened?
Australia were 245-6 when Carey attempted a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.
The England team were convinced they had a wicket, certain they had heard an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza gave it not out.
Following skipper Ben Stokes opted to review the decision, the technology reviewed by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a spike but this came prior to the ball had reached the bat.
Gaffaney also said he believed there was a space between bat and ball.
Consequently, Carey was given not out.
"I felt a little noise as the ball went past," commented Carey.
"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. It made a convincing sound near the bat."
Ongoing Scrutiny
Questions have been raised about 'the sound wave technology' during the series after a series of inconclusive calls.
England's bowling coach David Saker indicated England may take this most recent incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.
"So far we've let it go, but this might push us to take action," Saker said.
"It's been a worry for us all series long. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. That's where we are."
Personal Milestone
The ton was his maiden in Test cricket against England.
It was also an heartfelt moment for Carey, whose dad died in recent months. Carey's wife was emotional in the crowd as the batsman marked the occasion by glancing upward.
"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," stated Carey.
"You can probably understand my glance skyward. I'm fighting back the tears. But, no, it was great."
History of Controversy
Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.
He was the keeper who famously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 Ashes series, which created a febrile final day.
On his reprieve he added: "The sound wave didn't match up. That's how the game works; fortune plays a part."
"Maybe it went my way."
