In excess of 60,000 Flee Sudan's City After Seizure by RSF Paramilitary Group, United Nations Says

Refugees fleeing violence in Sudan
Numerous seek to get to the settlement of Tawila but face intimidation, extortion and abuse from fighters during their journey

As stated by the UNHCR, in excess of 60,000 individuals have fled the city in Sudan of el-Fasher, which was taken over by the militia RSF during the weekend.

There have been multiple executions and crimes against humanity as militia members entered the city following an year-and-a-half siege characterized by starvation and intense shelling.

The flow of those running from the conflict towards the community of Tawila, approximately 80km (50 miles) to the west of el-Fasher, had increased in the recent days, per United Nations refugee agency spokesperson.

They were telling terrible accounts of violence, featuring rape, and the agency was having trouble to locate adequate accommodation and food for them.

All children was affected by nutritional deficiencies, she added.

It is estimated that over 150,000 people are currently stranded in el-Fasher, which had been the military's final bastion in the western part of Darfur.

The Rapid Support Forces has rejected extensive allegations that the deaths in el-Fasher are driven by ethnicity and resemble a pattern of the Arab militia groups targeting non-Arab communities.

Yet the paramilitary group has custodied one of its fighters, Abu Lulu, who has been charged with summary executions.

The force released footage revealing the member's apprehension following verification that he was involved in the execution of numerous non-combatants in the vicinity of el-Fasher.

Video sharing service has confirmed that it has removed the channel associated with Lulu. It is not clear whether he had managed the profile in his name.

Sudan was plunged into a internal conflict in April 2023 following a intense power struggle began between its army and the RSF.

This has caused a famine and accusations of genocide in the Darfur area.

More than 150,000 people have died in the fighting throughout the country, and approximately 12 million have abandoned their residences in what the United Nations has described as the world's largest humanitarian crisis.

The capture of el-Fasher reinforces the regional separation in the country, with the RSF now in dominance of Sudan's west and significant areas of bordering Kordofan to the south, and the army controlling the capital, Khartoum, the center and east along the Red Sea.

The competing factions had been partners - gaining control together in a takeover in 2021 - but disagreed over an foreign-endorsed plan to transition to civilian leadership.
