Historical organ composition
Bach is believed to have created the two organ pieces during his early years

Recently identified musical pieces by the renowned composer Bach have been presented and played in the central European country for the premiere performance in 320 years.

The country's Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer called the finding of the two compositions a "important event for the musical community".

They originally drew interest of Peter Wollny in 1992 when he was organizing historical musical documents at the Brussels archive.

The musical compositions - the D minor Chaconne and G minor Chaconne - were dating unknown and without attribution. Mr Wollny spent the next 30 years working to confirm the origin of the pieces.

Historic Performance

They were performed at the historic Leipzig church in the German city, where Bach is interred and where he worked as a music director for over two decades.

The two pieces were executed by Dutch musician the musical performer, who said he was proud to be able to perform them for the initial performance in over three centuries.

He said the works were "of a very high quality" and would be "a valuable resource for organists today, as they are also appropriate for reduced-scale organs".

Historical Significance

They are considered to have been composed at the beginning of Bach's professional life, when he was serving as an organ teacher in the town of Arnstadt in central Germany.

Mr Wollny, who is now the director of the Bach Archive in the municipality, said they exhibited several qualities distinctive to the composer.

"In terms of style, the works also contain characteristics that can be observed in the composer's creations from this period, but not in those of other musicians," he said.

They are believed to have been transcribed in 1705 by a student of Bach, the historical figure.

At a unveiling of the works, Mr Wollny said he was "almost completely confident that the composer had written the pair of works" and they have now been incorporated into the authoritative listing of his musical output.
