Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Inclusion in English Test Series Team
England have chosen a 12-man squad just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether the venue pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected group, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with the latter expected to be omitted if the spinner makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five past matches.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers is still the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to offer some spin while also bolstering the batting lineup.
But the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” he said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
