The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead for World Cup In Spite of Formal Protests from Egypt and Iran

Plans for Pride-focused celebrations in Seattle amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue as scheduled, despite the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations raised objections about a planned “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and External Festivities

Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. This coincides with the Group G fixture featuring Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, the tournament's governing body will permit rainbow flags to be brought into the stadium.

“As the local organising committee, our primary task is to prepare our city to host the matches and oversee the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.

Legal Background Behind the Objections

Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation declared it refused to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation also raised “objections against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains operational control over match venues on matchdays. Although it prohibits political signage with political messages, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This regulation was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of authorities confiscating flags.

  • The Pride Match was an idea created to highlight the city's longstanding tradition of advocating for inclusion and equality.
  • A design contest is underway to create images to commemorate the event.
  • Planners have pledged to making sure every visitor feel welcome in the Pacific Northwest during the 48-team competition.

The Pacific Northwest is home to a significant most prominent Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations representing all nations. “We’re committed is to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that characterizes our region,” the statement added.
