The retail giant Enforces Buying Restrictions on Pokémon Trading Cards
As a notable development, Walmart has begun implementing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This new rule was activated as of early November, according to an internal announcement shared with employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that showed a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The employee featured in the video received widespread backlash for permitting the bulk transaction to go through.
Policy Details and Potential Loopholes
The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. Yet, the wording has sparked debate due to its vagueness. Precisely what counts as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, because the restriction is tied to each visit, in theory an eager reseller could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to gather large quantities over several hours.
The Scalping Phenomenon
To most players, such efforts might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. In recent years, scalpers have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the game's rising popularity.
Some resellers aim to resell sealed items at a markup, while others search for rare cards that can fetch extraordinary prices. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set has been listed for over $800 in online marketplaces.
Looking Ahead
This policy change coincides with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, scheduled for November 14th. Early listings already show premium cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the persistent interest and likely scalper target.
With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce mass buying and increase access for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts alike.
