The White Sox Land Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Major Multi-Million Dollar Contract.
In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract bringing in the accomplished player.
Deal Structure and Player Perks
The agreement features a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16M for the upcoming season and $17M for the following year.
Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for earning the MVP award.
- Half a million dollars for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for ranking fourth through 10th.
- $250,000 for earning the top rookie honor.
His deal provides that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his permission and allows him to become a free agent at the end of the term. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.
Posting Fee and Franchise History
As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club are also entitled to a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever player from Japan to play for the South Siders, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.
Career Highlights
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 in February, joins a young lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a difficult season, placing last in the American League Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.
A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, breaking the all-time record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was shortened to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Despite fanning 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. He started playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to third.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's heroics were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing two-base hit that brought home teammates for a dramatic 6-5 win. The next night in the title match against the United States, he slugged a game-tying shot in the early innings, helping Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.
The new White Sox addition is set to be formally introduced at a introductory event on Monday.
