UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a young woman containing multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to each person."

The core gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
