What's Inside that Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison forged from the memories of Vecna. Their quest for an escape route in episode 6 leads them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.
Editor's Note: The following reveals crucial plot points for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a viewing device taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.
There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the event wasn't just a fight for life.
Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the encounter originates in the live show The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science
*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a vessel into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to give to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the tunnel is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held vials of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.
Alternatively, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The stage play explains that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a sinister presence, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in the past.
A Weaponized Emotion
Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine demonstrates how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
