Powerful cold-season gusts brought walls down onto fragile tents sheltering Palestinians displaced by conflict in Gaza, killing no fewer than four individuals. This tragedy highlights the perilous situation that persist after more than two years of devastating bombardment and critical lack of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides Little Relief from Harsh Elements

Although a ceasefire has been active since last fall, humanitarian organizations report that Palestinians do not have the sufficient shelter necessary to withstand frequent cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which received the bodies, reported on Tuesday that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry stated on the same day that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has allowed us to witness death in every possible way," said Bassel Hamouda following the burial. "It’s true the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, 3 members of a single household — elderly a man, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his son's wife — were killed when an eight-metre tall wall fell on top of their tent in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than 5 additional people were hurt in the event.

Their relatives on that day began clearing the rubble that had buried their loved ones and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were distributing tents, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as food and sanitation supplies across Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of Palestinians reside in makeshift shelters since their homes were reduced to rubble over the course of the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations contend not enough building supplies are entering Gaza during the truce.

Fatality Figures After the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, says over four hundred and forty people have been killed by gunfire and their remains brought to hospitals since the ceasefire began. The ministry maintains detailed casualty records that are considered largely accurate by international bodies and outside analysts.

James Elder, representing the UN children's fund, said on Tuesday that at least 100 minors below eighteen years old – 60 males and 40 girls – had been killed since the truce began due to armed actions, including drone strikes, air raids, tank shelling and employment of bullets. Those figures, he explained, represented cases where sufficient information had been compiled to warrant recording, but the total toll is believed to be higher. He added that hundreds of children had been wounded.

"Although 'explosions and gunfire have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "So what the world now calls quiet would be viewed as a crisis anywhere else," he said.

Third Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s population of over 2 million people has been struggling to fend off the freezing temperatures and storms away while enduring shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently needed throughout the colder season. It’s the 3rd winter after the conflict involving the state and Hamas started on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and murdered around twelve hundred individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry says over seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been killed in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
